BEHIND THE NUMBERS

How the estimate works

01

One consistent profile

A 35-year-old single foreign employee, no children, locally earned salary and full-year tax residence. Ordinary deductions and mandatory employee contributions apply, subject to each country’s assumptions below.

02

Local rules, local currency

Annual gross pay is converted to local currency. Brackets, allowances, credits and contribution caps are applied before converting the result back. Sources were checked on 1 October 2026.

03

A comparison, with limits

No home-country tax obligations, special expat schemes, voluntary pension contributions, cash benefits or living expenses. Plan-specific payroll deductions can differ. Monthly estimates are annual totals divided by 12, not a predicted payslip.

A few useful answers

What is salary after tax?

Salary after tax, also called net salary or take-home pay, is gross employment income minus income tax and employee contributions. This calculator estimates those deductions for a fixed employee profile. Your payslip can also contain pension, insurance, loan or other deductions that are not covered here.

Does a higher ranking mean a country is better to live in?

No. The ranking compares estimated take-home pay from the same gross salary converted into local currency. It does not compare achievable local salaries, rent, healthcare costs, public services, purchasing power, visa eligibility or quality of life.

Why might my payslip or another calculator show a different amount?

Tax year, region, residency, age, family circumstances, payroll rounding, benefits and pension plans can all change the result. Some countries collect tax on a previous year’s income or spread pay across more than 12 payments. Check the assumptions and official sources for the selected country.

How are USD, EUR and monthly salaries handled?

The amount is converted to annual gross income, then into each country’s local currency using the saved exchange-rate snapshot. Tax and contributions are calculated locally before conversion back to USD or EUR. Average monthly estimated take-home pay is annual net divided by 12. Changing currency or period preserves the underlying annual salary.

Is my salary saved or sent to a server?

The calculator runs in your browser. It does not save your salary, send it to a salary API, include it in the page address or attach it to analytics events. Refreshing the page restores the default example.
